How Do You Define Cultural Diplomacy

Our Understanding

Public Diplomacy can be defined as an entire array of diplomatic instruments – cultural, educational, political, ideological, information and intelligence. It is designed to have relations with and influence foreign societies and foreign leaders with the ultimate effect of influencing foreign opinion.

Cultural Diplomacy uses culture to shape foreign fields of thought

Conducted through the arts, education, ideas, history, science, medicine, technology, religion, customs, manners, philanthropy, sports, and more, Cultural Diplomacy seeks to influence foreigners to have a positive view of the United States, its people, its culture, and its policies. In advocating for greater cooperation with the United States, this approach in turn will help to change the policies of foreign governments and to bring about political and /or cultural change to prevent conflicts with foreign adversaries.  Ultimately, understanding another country’s culture and customs meets the larger goal of improving global relations.
